L.A. River EstuaryFriends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) hosted the 23rd annual La Gran Limpieza: The Great L.A. River CleanUp on Saturday April 28, 2012.  Volunteers gathered at 15 sites along the river corridor,

stretching from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.  Maria Norvell, President of the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA), noted that the Estuary location at the Willow Street bridge in Long Beach had over 300 volunteers today.  WANA sponsored three sites during today’s cleanup.

FoLAR is just one of many organizations focused on restoring the L.A. river.  Others include Tree People, North East Trees, The River Project, the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council, and the Trust for Public Land. The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works Bureau of Engineering is currently managing the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan (LARRMP), which has a 25 to 50 year timeline for improving the river.

LA Convention Center ExpansionThe City of Los Angeles has issued a draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Convention and Event Center in downtown.  According to the city’s Notice of Availability (NOA), the project will increase the center’s current 1.8 milion square feet to a total of 4.1 million square feet.  The program will include modernization of the existing Convention Center, demolition of the existing West Hall exhibition building, and construction of a New Hall over Pico Boulevard.  A new Event Center, intended as a multi-purpose entertainment and sports venue and future home to the long debated Los Angeles football team, will be constructed in place of the demolished West Hall.  Additional parking garages will also be built to support the expanded center, increasing the available spaces to 6,670.  The comment period on the draft EIR ends Monday, May 21.

Stadium architect Gensler, Convention Center hall architect Populous, Gilbert Lindsay designer Melendrez, and parking structure architects HNA make up the project team, led by developer AEG.  Earlier this month, the team released a 3D architectural fly-through video of the project.
